Aston Villa are interested in signing Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa in the January window, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The regional newspaper claim that Villa manager Steve Bruce wants to land a front man with Premier League experience next month.

The Mail report that Bruce has been in lengthy talks with director of football Steve Round over potential January targets and has tasked the scouting team with finding cheaper players from abroad.

It is said that Villa will look closer to home to strengthen their attack and the two players on Bruce’s radar are Leicester’s Ulloa and Huddersfield’s Nahki Wells.

Good move for Aston Villa?

Ulloa is big, strong and with an eye for goal. He has a proven track record in the Championship at former club Brighton, where he pilfered 23 goals in 50 games, and could immediately make an impact at Villa Park. With Jonathan Kodjia set to miss the rest of the season, Keinan Davis more of a second striker, Scott Hogan simply not up to it and Ross McCormack out on loan, Bruce is having to rely upon the midfield and wide players for the bulk of the goals. Even at 31, Ulloa would be an excellent signing, and is good enough to do the business in the Premier League were they to secure promotion.

Likely to happen?

Much will depend on the numbers adding up. Ulloa will be on Premier League wages and has 18 months remaining on his contract. He has made just four appearances for Leicester this season and could be convinced he would be better off dropping down a division to get regular football.
