Tottenham Hotspur are set to smash their strict wage ceiling in an attempt to ward off growing interest in superstar striker Harry Kane, according to the Daily Mail

The newspaper claim that Euro giants Real Madrid are already lining up a move for Kane, who has just broken Alan Shearer’s record for most Premier League goals in a calendar year.

The club have held a strict wage structure for many years under chairman Daniel Levy, with the club’s top earners rarely earning much over £100,000-a-week, and a move away from that would be a sensational decision for Spurs to make.

Kane netted his second hat-trick in three days on Boxing Day as he bagged a treble against Southampton, taking him out to 39 goals for the year.

The Mail claim that Kane is one of the most valuable players in world football, and Spurs are now looking to offer him a bumper new deal that would see a significant raise on his current £110,000-a-week deal.

The new contract would be Kane’s fourth wage increase since August 2014, and he is currently the club’s top earner.

It is reported that Kane’s current deal sees him receive lucrative performance-based bonuses, which he has consistently been hitting with his starring displays for Tottenham.

OPINION

If there is one player that Tottenham should finally break their wage structure for, it is Harry Kane. The academy graduate has enjoyed a truly momentous rise from relative obscurity to the top of world football, and Spurs need to try and tie Kane down for the rest of his career. While Daniel Levy may hold hopes that Kane is the only player he has to break the structure for, in reality this will signal a move away from that strict ceiling at Spurs. The club need to start paying their players’ worths, and if it is Kane that causes them to start doing that, then so be it. Levy will thank him in the long run.
