Tottenham are preparing to table an official bid in January for AC Milan playmaker Suso, according to Calciomercato.

The Italian transfer site claim that the north Londoners are readying a fresh swoop for the Spaniard after failing to sign him during the summer window.

Calciomercato report that Mauricio Pochettino’s side had a £20.3million offer for Suso rejected and he has subsequently signed a new contract that contains a £44.2million release clause.

It is said that Spurs have reignited their pursuit of the 24-year-old ahead of the winter window, which opens next month.

Good move for Tottenham?

Given that he is a left-footer renowned for cutting in from the right flank and his passing range, Suso might be seen as a potential replacement for the injury-prone Erik Lamela, who has been linked with a return to Italy. Former Liverpool player Suso has reignited his career in Italy since signing for Milan in January 2015. He has been one of the star players of a struggling Milan side, with his 21 matches in all competitions this season yielding six goals and six assists. Those are the kind of numbers Lamela would die for.

Likely to happen?

Given the prohibitive release clause in Suso’s new contract, it would take a club-record fee for Spurs to land the much improved wide man. However, Milan are not swimming in cash and he could be prised from Italy at below the activation figure. Even if the player really pushes for a move to London, it would appear a massive task to seal this deal in January.
