Alan Shearer congratulated Tottenham striker Harry Kane on Twitter as he broke his record for the most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year.

Shearer has held the record for 22 years after he scored 36 top-flight goals in 1995.

However, Spurs’ centre-forward overtook that mark on Boxing Day as he opened the scoring to make it 1-0 at home to Southampton in his last game of 2017.

The 24-year-old has now netted 37 Premier League goals in the calendar year and has taken his game once again up a notch.

Shearer quickly responded on social media to Kane’s historic moment as he marked his name into the Premier League history books

“You’ve had a magnificent 2017 Harry Kane. You deserve to hold the record of most Premier League goals in a calendar,” Shearer wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Kane has also been tipped to surpass Shearer as the all-time leading Premier League goalscorer, but he will still have a long way to catch his 260-tally.

OPINION

Kane continues to improve each year and drew level with Barcelona great Lionel Messi as the leading goalscorer across all competitions in 2017. Spurs truly have one of the greatest centre-forwards in the business and he is an exciting prospect for England heading into next summer’s World Cup. Kane’s record-breaking goal highlighted his predatory instincts as he headed in Christian Eriksen’s pin-point cross from close-range in one of his easiest goals of the year. Kane is showing no signs of slowing down as he continues to be efficient in front of goal and he could go down as an all-time great if he continues on the same path.
