Florian Lejeune completed 90 minutes in the defeat to Arsenal on Saturday – and the Newcastle United fans on Twitter ripped into him for his performance.

The 26-year-old centre-back got the nod at centre-back for the trip to the Emirates Stadium and was unable to prevent a 1-0 away loss against the Gunners in the Premier League.

Mesut Ozil separated the two sides with a stunning volley in the first-half inside the penalty area after he pounced on a headed clearance by Lejeune.

Rafael Benitez’s side are now without a win in their last nine league matches and their slide down the table continued as they temporarily slipped into the relegation places.

Newcastle fans on social media voiced their anger towards Frenchman Lejeune for his individual display against Arsenal and feel he his levels have dropped off considerably.

Lejeune has been a regular starter since his arrival at St James’ Park in the summer and has managed to win over Benitez.

However, he still has a long way to go with supporters and many would prefer him to be among the substitutes in the next game against West Ham next weekend, which has turned into a vital game for the North East club.

He does face a serious battle to keep his starting XI position from teammates Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark, who played vital roles in obtaining promotion last season.

Newcastle supporters will know that defeat away to the Premier League’s big hitters won’t define their season, but they will be annoyed that their losing run has continued.
