The next most likely Leeds United signing is Bolton Wanderers playmaker Josh Vela, according to Football Whispers.

The attacking midfielder, 23, has rocketed up the list of expected Leeds arrivals amid speculation that he is a firm January target of the Championship promotion hopefuls.

Football Whispers, which gathers all transfer rumours across the globe and calculates the likelihood of them happening, rates it 3.2 out of 5 that Vela will join Leeds, with five the highest possible ranking and meaning it is a certainty.

The Bolton player is narrowly ahead in the ratings of Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback, who is rated at 3.1 to join Leeds, and Gamba Osaka midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi , who is rated at 3.0 to transfer to Elland Road.

Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen is reportedly looking to add to his options at Elland Road in January and funds will be made available to him following the £18million sale of Chris Wood to Burnley.

The Daily Mail recently reported that Championship duo Derby and Sheffield Wednesday are also interested in Vela, while Premier League side Brighton are also eyeing a move.

Good move for Leeds?

Vela is developing into a fine player after rising through the Bolton ranks and has played a key role in dragging them off the foot of the Championship table. He has supplied three assists from Championship appearances this season in a struggling team after recovering from an ankle injury that sidelined him in the opening two months of the campaign. Leeds are not short of gifted playmakers, with Samuel Saiz and Pablo Hernandez two of the best in the division, and it might be regarded as more prudent to strengthen at left-back, centre-back or centre-forward.

Likely to happen?

Leeds will face a very tough battle if they are to win the race for Vela, but have shown they are willing to invest in players with their best years ahead of them. Should a bidding war for the Bolton player get underway, the Yorkshire giants are likely to take a back seat.
