Liverpool have been informed by Portuguese giants Benfica that they must play £35million for defender Alejandro Grimaldo, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet claims that the top-flight club have contacted the Reds to reveal that they won’t consider selling the left-back unless their £35million valuation is met.

It is understood that Benfica have also told interested suitors Juventus the same message, with the club highly rating the 22-year-old.

Grimaldo only arrived in Portugal on a five-year deal back in 2016 and the young full-back has since established himself as a regular.

Good move for Liverpool?

Liverpool’s left-back position has been a strange situation for the past couple of years and fans would love to see a new signing cement that area of the pitch.

Alberto Moreno has completed a drmatic turnaround this campaign to regain his spot int he starting XI and his much more efficient going forward.

Grimaldo is an exciting young talent at Valencia that is developing into a well-rounded left-back and has the potential to be a success at Anfield.

The Spaniard has already made 11 appearances this campaign and has experience in the Champions League under his belt.

However, it would be a risk for Jurgen Klopp to splash out £35million-plus for the defender as he is still not the finished article and summer signing Andrew Robertson is yet to get a real look in at full-back.

Likely to happen?

It seems unlikely that Grimaldo will leave Benfica in the near future and the hefty £35million price tag is further assurance for the club.

The defender is a product of the Barcelona academy and is now carving out a senior career in Portugal.

He is a technically gifted player that Liverpool are keen on, but it seems improbably they would spend well over £30million for him.

Klopp has taken a fancy to Moreno this campaign and a new centre-back could be an immediate priority in the transfer window.
