Ian Wright believes that West Ham’s forward pair of Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez are going to be crucial in the club avoiding relegation this season.

Slaven Bilic lost his job at the London Stadium this season and his successor David Moyes suffered a disappointing start to his managerial reign with a defeat at the weekend.

The Hammers fell to a 2-0 away loss against Watford and it means they remain in the relegation zone after the opening 12 Premier League games.

Moyes suffered the drop last season with Sunderland as they finished bottom of the top flight.

His team managed just 29 goals throughout the entire campaign and Wright feels that the manager must get the best out of his strikers at West Ham.

The Hammers have two recognised forwards in Carroll and Hernandez, who are yet to fire on all cylinders this season.

“Moyes was desperate to get back into football and — despite the Hammers being in the bottom three — they DO have better players than he had at Sunderland,” Wright wrote in the Sun.

“The one thing he did have up there was a goalscorer, in Jermain Defoe.

“But he’s got a couple this time, too, in Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez. The key is keeping them fit.”

OPINION

Carroll is still yet to score this season in eight appearances and Moyes needs to find a way to rediscover his top form. The 28-year-old can be a great weapon on his day and there are very few defenders in the league that can match his physicality. He has struggled due to a lack of service and needs to focus more on getting in the right positions where his chances will come. Meanwhile, Hernandez has netted four times this campaign and has proven throughout his career he is a clinical finisher. The 29-year-old has the firepower to guide West Ham away from relegation and could be a saving grace for them.
