Newcastle United supporters have gone into meltdown on Twitter amid reports that tycoon Amanda Staveley has tabled a £300million takeover bid.

Sky News reported on Monday evening that the 44-year-old financier’s PCP Capital Partners submitted the offer to Magpies owner Mike Ashley last week to buy the Tyneside club.

It is said that the next step would be to award Staveley “a period of exclusivity within which to negotiate a deal” and this could come as early as this week.

Current owner Ashley has been a hugely unpopular figure at St James’ Park as he has failed to invest heavily in the team compared to Premier League rivals and has overseen two relegations from the top flight in just over a decade.

Manager Rafa Benitez, who is a firm favourite of the Toon faithful, has made no secret of the fact that he has not been backed by Ashley in the transfer market during his reign.

Newcastle fans were quick to react on social media to the Sky News report and the majority of them were delighted to hear that Staveley could soon be taking the reigns on Tyneside.
