West Ham rejected in Ancelotti approach

|

West Ham have failed in a stunning bid to appoint Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports Italy correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio reported on his personal website on Tuesday that the Hammers made a move for three-times Champions League winning boss Ancelotti to take over at the London Stadium.

It is said that the Italian, 58, rebuffed West Ham’s advances and they turned to David Moyes, who has agreed the terms of a short-term deal that runs until the end of the season.

West Ham announced on Monday morning that they had sacked Slaven Bilic after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool left the team marooned at 18th in the Premier League table.

Ancelotti was sacked by Bayern Munich on 28 September following a 3-0 Champions League defeat at Paris Saint-Germain despite guiding the club to the Bundesliga title in his full season at the helm.

The former midfielder has had great success in his managerial career, winning league titles at AC Milan, Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern as well as two Champions Leagues at Milan and one at Real.

OPINION

Credit to West Ham for daring to do in their Ancelotti pursuit, but it was always doomed to failure. A list of the six teams managed by the serial winner in his glittering career strongly suggest that he would regard a move to a team placed 18th in the Premier League as a massive step down. Five weeks ago, the king of the raised eyebrow was managing mighty Bayern. Expect his next managerial post to be equally high profile.
