Derek McInnes is the hot favourite to be appointed by Rangers as their new manager – and he should make his presence felt by launching bids to sign three players he knows well.

The Sunday Post claim that the Scottish giants will step up their pursuit of the 46-year-old in the coming days and he will imminently be announced as the successor to the sacked Pedro Caixinha.

It is said that Rangers are prepared to meet Aberdeen’s compensation demands to land McInnes and his assistant Tony Docherty, with the release fee for the pair set at £800,000.

McInnes and Docherty are big names in Scottish football, know the league inside out and have a track record of building  a team to punch above its weight.

The duo have steered Aberdeen to three consecutive runners-up spots in the Scottish Premiership as well as the 2013-14 Scottish League Cup, which was the club’s first trophy for 20 years.

Caixinha signed 11 new players during the summer and some have adapted well to the demands of playing for the Glasgow giants, while others have flopped badly.

Should he be hired by Rangers, McInnes must use the January transfer market to strengthen the squad further and try to narrow the gap on league leaders Celtic.

This Is Fubtol analyses three players that the 46-year-old can realistically sign in January, including a Celtic rising star who has made no secret of his admiration for the Dons boss.
