Reports that Rangers are set on appointing former England boss Steve McClaren as their new manager are “absolute guff”, according to a reliable journalist.

Scottish Sun correspondent Andy Devlin has claimed on his personal Twitter account that a story in his own newspaper about planned talks with McClaren was nonsense, as was the subsequent follow-up by Sky Sports.

The Scottish Sun reported on Sunday evening that Rangers were set to hold talk with McClaren about filling their vacant managerial post and Sky Sports then reported on their website on Monday morning that the club were planning an approach to the 56-year-old.

Devlin reported that the story is incorrect and he was “always happy to try and set wrongs right”.

McClaren is currently working as a consultant for Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv after recently pulling out of the running to replace Ian Cathro as Hearts manager.

Rangers fans insisted on social media they were unhappy at the prospect of the former Newcastle United, Wolfsburg, Twente and Derby County boss taking the reins, following his unimpressive record in recent years.

OPINION

The irony of a Scottish Sun reporter rubbishing a story in his own newspaper will not be lost on some people, but Devlin is adamant that McClaren is not under consideration. It appears the Englishman’s name has been leaked to either increase his exposure at a time when he has a coaching job in a football backwater, or to make it appear that Rangers are sifting through a number of candidates before making their final decision. Few expect the outcome to be anything other than Derek McInnes getting the job within the next week, especially as the compensation bill needed to prise him from Aberdeen is a relatively lowly £750,000.
