Henning Berg has applied to become the new Rangers manager, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims that the 48-year-old has emerged as the latest candidate for the vacant position of full-time manager at Ibrox.

It is understood that Berg wants to return to the Light Blues after finishing his playing career with them and feels he could be a good successor to Pedro Caixinha.

The report details that the Norwegian has thrown his name into the hat, but that the Scottish giants are preferring a British boss and that Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes remains the strong favourite.

McInnes is the strong favourite with bookmakers to make the switch to Ibrox, but he has a £800,000 compensation clause in his Aberdeen contract.

Berg does have managerial experience under his belt and previous managed in Britain before with English Championship side Blackburn.

He most recently left Hungarian side Videoton after missing out on the top-flight title on the final day of the season and is currently on the search for a new position.

The manager also helped Polish side Legia Warsaw win a league title and domestic club during his time there.

OPINION

Berg is someone who would not be unfamiliar to the surroundings at Rangers and is building a decent managerial career, but it would be a surprise to see him Caixinha’s successor. It is beleived that the Gers board want to go down the route of a British manager and McInnes has been widely reported as the favourite now for a long time. Graeme Murty is currently in caretaker charge of Rangers, but the club need to move quickly to give the new man time to settle in. They are just three points adrift of Aberdeen in the table and there is every chance they can still save their season despite a disappointing end for Caixinha.
