Celtic eye Australian deal

|

Celtic are in talks to buy a stake in Australian side Central Coast Mariners, according to their chairman.

Mike Charlesworth told the Sydney Morning Herald that officials from the Scottish giants have been in discussions about securing an ownership stake in the A-league side.

The newspaper report that Celtic are eager to gain a foothold in the Australian market by following the lead of cash-rich Manchester City.

It is said that representatives of the Hoops visited the Central Coast a fortnight ago and took in the facilities at Mariners’ training centre.

Parkhead chiefs have also expressed an interest in Brisbane Roar in recent months, but the Sydney Morning Herald report that Mariners would be their preferred choice and the club could make a bid as early as December 1.

Charlesworth insists he’s not surprised to see a club of Celtic’s stature look to invest in Australian football.

He said: “I’m not surprised about their interest based on a new A-League operating model because I think it’s got a lot of potential.

“Frankly, I haven’t personally spoken to anyone at Celtic, that’s been handled by chief executive Shaun Mielekamp and [chief financial officer] Kathy Duncan.”

OPINION

Celtic are eager to explore alternative revenue streams, as there is little room for growth in Scotland, where they already have a stranglehold on the domestic trophies, have reached the Champions League group stage in four out of the last six seasons, and broadcasting, matchday and merchandise revenue is maxed. Barring the odd player sale, all existing streams are drained. Celtic have seen their investment in Tom Rogic soar since his 2013 arrival, and the possibility of further top Australian stars moving to Parkhead is a very realistic one if they can agree a deal with the Mariners.
