Ranger midfielder Jamie Barjonas has agreed a new three-year contract with the club, it has been confirmed.

The Gers announced on their official website on Monday afternoon that the midfield enforcer, 18, has signed a deal that runs until 2020.

He follows fellow rising Aidan Wilson in putting pen to paper on a new deal, with Rangers reporting that more players are in talks over fresh terms and are set to follow in the coming weeks.

Barjonas made his first-team debut at the tail-end of last season before being handed a shock first start against St. Johnstone in the final game of 2016-17.

The central midfielder has gone on to force his way back into the matchday squad in recent weeks.

Academy chief Craig Mulholland has been delighted with Barjonas’ progress and believes he has made real strides over the last year.

“Jamie is another one who we have been speaking to over the last few weeks, and I think the progress he has made in the first-team in the last few weeks has been excellent,” Mulholland said to the official website.

“He is obviously a combative midfield player who is still only 18, so to get him tied up to 2020 means it is another one of the club’s young players that we have secured for the future.

“Jamie has been in the academy since the age of eight I think, and over the last 12 months, he has really kicked-on. You look at him – he is a strong athlete who is technically good.”

OPINION

Credit to Rangers to having one eye on the future as well as the present. Ross McCrorie is the name on everyone’s lips after taking to first-team football like a duck to water, but there have been glowing reviews also about the performances of Barjonas for the youth team this season. The midfielder has all the tools to play at the highest level, impressing with his energy, commitment and understanding of the anchorman role. He also has a hammer of a right foot and scored a couple of peachy long-rangers for the Under-20s last season.
