Harry Redknapp has suggested that new West Ham manager David Moyes must give Andy Carroll a more prominent role in the team.

The Hammers announced the 54-year-old as their new boss until the end of the season as he takes over from Slaven Bilic.

He finds himself with a team in the bottom three of the Premier League during the international break and with the worst defensive record in the division.

West Ham have also struggled to find any consistency in the final third and are in real danger of a huge relegation fight this season.

Redknapp believes that the London club look a better side with powerful centre-forward Carroll in their team.

The 28-year-old has completed 90 minutes in just one of the 11 league games so far and is yet to chalk up his first goal of the season.

“The best I’ve seen West Ham play this season was the Huddersfield game at home,” Redknapp told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Andy Carrol played, they handed it to Andy Carroll at every opportunity when they got in the final third.

“He dropped balls down, the little guy [Javier] Hernandez was lively and running off him and getting around him, and if that’s effective then that’s the way you’ve got to play.”

OPINION

Moyes certainly needs to address the problems in attack and has the players already in his squad to dig his side out of a relegation fight. Carroll has proven in the past that he can be a great option in the top flight and has 50 Premier League goals under his belt during his career. The English striker terrorises defenders with his physical strength and just needs a run of games to help rediscover his touch in front of goal. Meanwhile, summer signing Javier Hernandez is another proven goalscorer and the Hammers can become a real force if the duo strike up a partnership.
