Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a move for Atletico Madrid ace Saul Niguez.

The Sun claims that United boss Jose Mourinho is a massive fan of the 22-year-old as he seeks to add more attack-minded midfield players to the squad.

The newspaper reports that the Spaniard is interested in securing a move to Old Trafford despite his incredible £134million release clause.

Good move for Manchester United?

In the absence of the injured Paul Pogba, United have certainly struggled to provide much of an attack threat, and it is wise of Mourinho to look for players capable of making the desired impact in the final third.

Saul has demonstrated that he has the ability to deliver the goods in front of goal throughout his three year stint at Atletico.

The Spaniard was crucial as Diego Simeone’s side reached the Champions League final last year, providing a wonderful assist against Barcelona and scoring a fantastic goal against Bayern Munich in the process.

The attacking midfielder has contributed with nine goals and four assists for the La Liga side in the last two consecutive seasons in all competitions.

Similar to Atletico, he has endured a slow start to this campaign with only one goal to his name, but as the season progresses, he is likely to find rhythm and the perfect opportunity will come this weekend in the derby against Real Madrid.

With Saul having achieved so much at such a young age, it is encouraging for United as there is still room for improvement and he could potentially blossom under Mourinho’s guidance.

Likely to happen?

United will be delighted that the player is open to switch but it all depends on whether both clubs can agree on a fee.

Even in the current climate, spending £134million on a player who has failed to win a trophy with his club is ludicrous and if the Manchester club are prepared to pursue Saul, they will surely try and negotiate a cheaper deal.

If Atletico continue to struggle both domestically and in Europe, it will not be too much of a surprise to see Saul decide to test the waters elsewhere with the Premier League seemingly his preferred destination.
