Tottenham are preparing an £8.8million bid for Besiktas midfielder Tolgay Arslan, according to Fotomac.

The Turkish sport news website claim that Spurs are keen on snapping up the 27-year-old in the January window and their incoming offer is only marginally short of the asking price.

Fotomac report that Besiktas are willing to sell Arslan if their £10.5million asking price is met.

The central midfielder, who can also operate in a defensive role, has made 88 appearances for the Turkish side since moving from the Bundesliga, with 15 of those coming during the current campaign.

The former Germany under-21 international has a contract at Besiktas that runs until 2022.

Good move for Tottenham?

A swoop for a 27-year-old central midfielder seems a peculiar move given that Spurs already have some mighty fine players in that position, including Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama, Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko. Furthermore, Josh Onomah is at his best in a deep-lying playmaker role and has been playing well on loan at Aston Villa and will be vying for a place in the first team squad in the future. There is also widespread talk of a January move for Everton’s Ross Barkley. Arslan is hardly a priority.

Likely to happen?

The Turkish media have a fondness for linking the leading players from their leagues to the Premier League big guns. Who can forget the endless reports that Spurs were close to buying Bruma last season before he eventually joined RB Leipzig? Treat this with a heavy dose of salt.
