Former Spurs forward Chris Waddle has predicted that his former side will get knocked out at the quarter-final stage in this season’s Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have managed to reach the knockout stages of the elite competition for the first time in six years.

Spurs are currently top of the group which contains back-to-back Champions League winners Real Madrid and Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, and they beaten both with a 3-1 scoreline at Wembley Stadium.

It is a massive improvement from the previous campaign where they failed to get out of the group stage and then were subsequently knocked out early in the Europa League.

The last time Tottenham competed in the Champions League, they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage when Madrid beat them 5-0 on aggregate during the 2010-11 campaign.

On Sunday afternoon, Waddle answered fans’ questions on his personal Twitter account and when he was asked about how Spurs would fare in Europe, he is convinced that they will get progress to the quarter-finals.

OPINION

After their impressive victory over current holders Madrid, Spurs will and should believe that they can go all the way in the competition if they manage to keep their main men fully fit. Although there are a number of top class teams in the competition, Tottenham can take great confidence from their group stage performances and they must aim high. When they play to their full potential, they are a force for any team in Europe but as shown in the Premier League match against Manchester United earlier this season, sometimes they just lack belief on the big stage. Taking everything into account, we tend to agree with Waddle’s prediction but it all comes down to the luck of the draw which means that anything is possible for Pochettino and his team.
