Alan Shearer has blasted Tottenham by stating they must win a trophy soon and pinpointed their form against top-six rivals as a major concern.

Spurs suffered a crushing 2-0 away defeat against north London rivals Arsenal on Saturday as they were dealt another blow in the Premier League.

Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez were on target for the Gunners as they impressed during a comfortable win.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have slipped down to fourth in the league table and are now 11 points adrift of runaway leaders Manchester City.

Spurs have a record of just one victory in their last 17 away games against their main rivals of Arsenal, Man City, Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Shearer believes that Spurs will be unable to win the title unless that form improves drastically and feels the pressure is on for them to win a trophy in the near future.

“They’ve got no chance of winning the league unless that improves,” Shearer told Match of the Day.

“We keep hearing about the potential of this Tottenham team and the potential of their manager. For them to be classed as a very good team they’ve got to win a trophy and win one soon.”

OPINION

Spurs looked well off the pace at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday and were unable to get near an Arsenal side that looked on top of their game. It is clear that they need to improve against their main rivals and take points off of them when they get the opportunity. The North London club have now disappointed in games against Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal already this season. Pochettino’s side have the quality to beat anyone on their day as they showed on the European stage against Real Madrid, but they desperately need to start turning in those types of performances in the Premier League too.
