Matt Le Tissier believes that Tottenham are realistically competing for second in the Premier League this season and feels that the title could be beyond them.

Spurs have made a decent start to the new league season and have 20 points from their opening 10 games, which has helped them to third in the table.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have competed for the top-flight title in the past two consecutive campaigns, but missed out to Chelsea and Leicester respectively.

The North London club have suffered two defeats at the hands of Chelsea and Manchester United so far and now turn their attention to a home clash at Wembley against Crystal Palace.

Sky Sports pundit Le Tisssier feels that Spurs will be in the mix for second in the league, but has hinted that current table toppers Manchester City could be too strong.

Pep Guardiola’s side are top of the league with nine wins and one draw from their opening 10 games, scoring a sensational 35 goals in return.

“I think they’ve got enough quality to say they aren’t reliant on one player,” Le Tissier told Sky Sports.

“The two defeats they’ve had have been to Chelsea and Manchester United so only the draws with Swansea and Burnley are what would be concerning.

“I would say they are in contention for second place rather than the title, given Manchester City’s start.”

OPINION

Man City are the clear favourites for the title and if they continue in the same rich vein of form they could be uncatchable. However, Spurs, Manchester United and Chelsea will hope they can catch the runaway leaders at this early stage and there are still 28 games to play. Pochettino’s side will be given a big lift by their European success this season and need to transform that on to the domestic stage. They beat Real Madrid 3-1 on Wednesday night in the Champions League group stages and that should ignite a good run of form for them.
