Martin Keown has claimed that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will be left with the nightmare of losing his star players if the club don’t win silverware.

Spurs produced a sensational 3-1 victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday night in the Champions League group stages and will be brimming with confidence.

The North London club are hoping to go deep into the European competition this campaign, while also challenging for the Premier League title.

They have some of the finest players in English football in the shape of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, who have been tipped with moves to Madrid in the past.

However, Spurs are without a trophy since the League Cup in 2008 and it is the one thing missing from Pochettino’s impressive CV.

Ex-Arsenal defender Keown has warned the Argentinian manager that Spurs could lose all of their key man if they don’t start to fill up their trophy cabinet.

“If this great Tottenham team does not win a trophy, there is every likelihood that it will get broken up,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“That has to be Mauricio Pochettino’s worst nightmare.

“But last night’s victory [against Real Madrid] will count for something. This result could be enough for Tottenham to push on again.”

OPINION

Pochettino will know that winning silverware is imperative for top players and that Spurs can’t continue as the nearly-men forever. They have some brilliant footballers in their squad that are hugely admired all over and there may only be so long you can say no before one superstar exits. Pochettino must be admired for the core team he has built in the past couple of seasons, with the likes of Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele, Christian Eriksen, Alli and Kane running through the team. They are in a brilliant position to finally go and win a trophy so playing a strong side in the FA Cup seems a smart move. Meanwhile, they will take confidence from their Champions League win in mid-week and have experience in Premier League title races gained from the last two seasons.
