Alderweireld and Wanyama miss West Brom clash

|

Tottenham have confirmed that they will be without Victor Wanyama and Toby Alderweireld for Saturday’s Premier League clash against West Brom.

Spurs announced on their official Twitter account early on Thursday afternoon that the senior duo are both still sidelined with injuries and will take no part in the action at Wembley at the weekend.

Alderweireld suffered a hamstring injury in Spurs’ historic Champions League triumph against Real Madrid at Wembley earlier this month while Wanyama has been out of action since August with a serious knee injury.

Tottenham are aiming to build upon their midweek win at Borussia Dortmund and return to domestic winning ways after their defeat to Arsenal last Saturday.

OPINION

Spurs coped brilliantly without Alderweireld in midweek, but they looked an easier defence to dismantle when the Belgian was missing against Arsenal. It is not just the 28-year-old’s commanding presence, mobility and positional excellence. He is also better on the ball than Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Jan Vertonghen, who have made up the backline in the last three matches. Without Dier in central midfield, Mauricio Pochettino would love even more to have 2016-17 mainstay Victor Wanyama available. Harry Winks has risen to the occasion brilliantly in the last month or two, especially as Mousa Dembele’s match time is limited these days, but the likes of Dele Alli and Moussa Sissoko are better utilised in more attacking positions than central midfield, where they have each started one of the last two matches.
