Rafael Benitez will look to sell Aleksandar Mitrovic for the third consecutive transfer window in January, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim that the Newcastle manager does not believe the Serbian striker can be trusted due to his disciplinary problems.

The Chronicle report that the striker, who the Daily Star report earns £60,000-a-week, would have been sold in either January of this year or in the summer had the Magpies received a “decent offer”.

It is said that Benitez will once again listen to offers for Mitrovic in the forthcoming winter window.

The 23-year-old is yet to start a Premier League game for the club this season and has been left out of the squad for three of the last four matches.

He scored in his first outing of the season in a 3-0 win over West Ham but was subsequently banned for three games after being charged with violent conduct for an off-the-ball incident.

Good move for Newcastle?

Benitez appears to value the ability to trust his players more than anything and this is an area where the combustible Mitrovic is sorely lacking. He has a reasonable Newcastle record of 17 goals from 68 matches but the club need a more reliable striker if they are to break into the Premier League top ten. The Magpies are right to get rid and should use the fee to buy an upgrade.

Likely to happen?

It appears that Mitrovic is on borrowed time at St James’ Park, and that it would be a mild surprise if he was still at the club on 1 February.
