Liverpool fans took to Twitter to criticise Emre Can following a goalless first-half display in their Champions League clash against Maribor.
The central midfielder was named in the Merseysiders’ starting XI as one of four changes made by manager Jurgen Klopp to the side that beat Huddersfield last Saturday.
Loris Karius resumed in goal as he has done for the Champions League and another European regular Trent Alexander-Arnold came in at right-back, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was also given a rare start.
Simon Mignolet, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge dropped out of the team, and there was also no place for the injured Philippe Coutinho.
Liverpool demolished Maribor 7-0 in the reverse fixture a fortnight ago, but found the Slovenian side a tougher nut to crack as they put 11 men behind the ball in a deliberately defensive set-up ,and the score was 0-0 at half-time.
Can has been a regular for Liverpool this season, starting all six of their Champions League fixtures as well as seven of their 10 Premier League matches.
But supporters took to social media en masse to lay into the Germany international, with the criticisms including his “pedestrian” style of plan and wonky passing.
This Is Futbol has rounded up some of the best tweets:
Can is a poor player. Needs to be sold ASAP.
