Liverpool wonderkid Adam Lewis is set for promotion from the club’s Under-18s to the Under-23s as he targets a first team spot.

Under-18s manager Steven Gerrard has predicted big things for the 18-year-old, who has been transformed from an attacking midfielder to a left-back this season.

Lewis was the outstanding performer in the team’s 2-1 win against Sunderland at Kirby last Friday night and drew considerable praise from his coach and a club icon.

Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo: “Adam’s been doing it for us all season long. I’m been singing his praises all along. If Adam can keep his consistency up I don’t think he’ll be around this team much longer.

“Going forward, I haven’t seen anyone as good as him at that age in terms of quality and what he can deliver in the final third.”

OPINION

Asked to describe himself in three words, Lewis told the official Liverpool website, “Funny, handsome and good to be around”. The cheeky demeanour belies a steely determination that has helped him bounce back from a broken leg two years ago to become one of the academy talents who the club’s coaches have tipped for big things. Gerrard has already admitted he is about to lose the teenager to the Under-23s, and the possibility is now growing that he could follow Trent Alexander-Arnold all the way from the Under-18s into the first team. It will certainly help Lewis in his quest to play for the seniors of the club he joined age six that he has been switched to left-back, something of a problem position for the club in recent seasons. Alberto Moreno is the man in possession, with James Milner and Andrew Robertson as back-up, but there is the sense that none of the three represent the long-term solution.
