Tony Cascarino believes that Watford boss Marco Silva is too big for the Everton job and could manage a team in the Champions League in the near future.

The Toffees have been heavily linked with a move for the 40-year-old manager as they look to fill their vacant position five weeks on from sacking Ronald Koeman.

The Times have reported that Watford have issued a cease and desist letter to Everton ordering them to stop their pursuit of their current manager, who has emerged as a main target for the Merseyside club.

It is understood that Watford are so determined to keep Silva in charge at Vicarage Road that they would not accept an offer of £25million compensation for him.

Cascarino is convinced that Everton are punching above their weight by trying to land the Portuguese tactician and that Silva is destined for greater things.

“I think Marco Silva has to forget interest from clubs such as Everton and focus on where he is for now, because if his success continues he is in line for a top-six job,” Cascarino wrote in the Times.

“I think he’s bigger than the Everton job and should sit tight and wait for a club fighting for the Champions League.”

OPINION

Silva is fast becoming one of the most talked about managers in the Premier League and has drawn comparisons with Jose Mourinho’s. The Everton pursuit to bring him to Goodison Park appears over, but to state that he is too big for the Merseyside club is a bit of an insult. Everton may be under performing so far this campaign, but they are a far more established side than Watford. They have had a huge injection of cash into the club and were expected to be pushing for Champions League spots at the beginning of the season. Silva may well go on to become an elite manager, but there is no reason why Everton can’t have been a brilliant springboard for him.
