Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Liverpool’s American owners are “happy” with the team’s progress despite their mixed start to the season.

Klopp explained that Fenway Sports Group have told him them are content although the manager insisted he has set himself the target of winning the Premier League at Anfield.

The German took over in October 2015 and steered Liverpool to two finals in his first campaign before securing fourth spot and Champions League qualification in his second season.

The Merseyside giants have yet to hit the heights this season and are fifth in the Premier League, 12 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.

At a charity dinner in South Africa, when asked how his Premier League career came about, he said, as quoted by the Sun: “Why Liverpool? I had an offer of another historical English club two years ago, but I never felt comfortable with how they understood football. It didn’t feel right.

“When Liverpool called, I can’t explain it. It was right.

“We have to improve, 100 per cent. But we will. We are fine and the owners are happy.

“Liverpool is a fantastic club, and my aim is to win the Premier League with it.”

OPINION

Will Liverpool win the Premier League under Klopp and end their near-30 year search for the holy grail? Maybe, but the competition is intense and he might have to stick around for quite some time to do so. It is difficult to see it happening this season, given the fierce competition and the excellence of Man City, who have been taken to a new level under Pep Guardiola. FSG are sensible owners, but they are unwilling to subsidise a transfer splurge in the manner of the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea. Nevertheless, they are a good fit with Klopp, who is a developmental manager who likes to improve players on the training ground rather than splash out on established stars like Jose Mourinho.
