Joey Barton has taken a dig at Liverpool on Twitter claiming that they could be closer to the relegation zone than the league title.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were unable to beat current Premier League champions Chelsea on Saturday afternoon despite taking the lead through summer signing Mohamed Salah.
Chelsea substitute Willian responded with a late equaliser which means the Reds are now in sixth position, two points off the Champions League places.
With Manchester City enjoying a blistering start to the Premier League campaign, the Merseyside club appear to be well off a title challenge this season.
When asked to defend his recent comments about Liverpool on his official Twitter account, Barton couldn’t resist to take a dig at the club for their current situation in the league table.
@Joey7Barton Mr Barton, you stated on talksport last night that LFC are getting further from the top teams closer to the teams below. Could you please tell me what teams they are? #nonsense

If Man City win today, Liverpool on 23pts will be 14pts behind them. West Ham are currently 18th in the relegation zone and on 10pts. Thus, Liverpool will be closer to the relegation zone than being champions. As you were ?? https://t.co/r0cqHIXE46

OPINION
Barton has always been one to stir controversy and he knows exactly what he is doing when he replies in such a manner. It is true that Liverpool have not been able to produce consistent performances in the Premier League this season which has seen them fall behind their fellow rivals not only in the race for the league title but for the top-four. It’s the same story for the Reds as their defensive frailties have harmed their chances both domestically and in Europe to progress. Although Barton does have a point with regards to Liverpool’s league form, he is deliberately being provocative with his responses even though he probably doesn’t believe in them.
