Le Tissier: Baines and Williams have been poor

|

Sky pundit Matt Le Tissier has ripped into Everton defenders Leighton Baines and Ashley Williams for their shocking form this season.

The duo are both regarded as senior players in the Toffees team and have been a part of a back-line that have really struggled recently.

The Merseyside club have shipped 20 goals in their 10 league games, while seven goals have been conceded in their three Europa League matches so far.

Ronald Koeman lost his job as the manager at Goodison park and caretaker boss David Unsworth is yet to change Everton’s fortunes round defensively.

Le Tissier has highlighted the poor performances of centre-back Williams and left-back Baines this campaign, suggesting they have been a big reason behind Everton’s defensive vulnerabilities

“The back four for me is a huge problem at Everton, it wasn’t something that was addressed this summer,” Le Tissier told the Sky Sports’ The Debate show.

“I’ve watched Leighton Baines play this season and I’m a massive fan of Leighton Baines, think he has been a fantastic full-back, his legs look like they’ve gone.

“Ashley Williams has had a shocking start to the season. Defensively they’ve been an absolute shambles.”

OPINION

Everton’s defensive issues need fixing quickly to help drag them away from the relegation places and perhaps a rotation in players is needed. Williams has looked well off the pace so far this campaign and supporters have been calling for him to be axed from the starting XI. The 33-year-old is a mainstay in the Toffees side and his lack of pace combined with some uncharacteristic mistakes have been a concen. Meanwhile, 32-year-old full-back Baines has seen his form dipped this campaign despite being a loyal servant for many years. Baines has no genuine competition for the left-back position and it is difficult to see how any manager could fix that problem in the immediate future.
