Everton close in on Allardyce

|

Sam Allardyce is set to sign a deal to become the new Everton manager “in the coming days”, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that the former England manager is on the verge of penning a stunning £100,000-a-week deal with the Merseyside giants.

The Sun report that Allardyce has agreed an “emergency” deal that runs only until the end of the season and ex-Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare will be appointed as his No?2.

It is said that Everton’s first choice was Watford boss Marco Silva, but the Portuguese opted to show loyalty to Vicarage Road after only joining them in the summer.

Former West Ham, Sunderland, Bolton, Blackburn and Crystal Palace boss Allardyce will take charge of his first Everton game on 18 November immediately after the international break.

OPINION

The reportedly imminent appointment of Allardyce reeks of short-termism, given his age and the fact that he has not stuck around for long in each of his last three jobs. It also suggests that Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright are frightened to death of relegation, and believe Allardyce is their best best to avoid getting sucked into the drop zone in May. Fair enough, the 63-year-old is almost a cast-iron guarantee of keeping teams up. But there are only 11 league matches gone, Everton have plenty of time to climb to safety and indeed secure a top-eight finish.
