Leeds United are weighing up a January bid for Rangers left-back Declan John, according to Football Insider.

The reliable football news site claim Leeds are weighing up a winter swoop for the Wales international, 22, after being impressed by his performances since moving to Ibrox in August on loan from Cardiff City.

Football Insider report that the defender has caught the eye of Elland Road scouts and that an offer to the player’s parent club Cardiff is on the cards.

John is in the final year of his contract at Cardiff, who could decide to try and cash in on him in January rather than allow him to run down his contract next summer.

Good move for Leeds?

Almost certainly. Leeds have a major problem at left-back following the summer exit of Charlie Taylor to Burnley. Gaetano Berardi and Vurnon Anita are reasonable stop-gaps but neither are natural left-footers, while on-loan Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has been a major disappointment and could return to Manchester United before his loan expires. Leeds lost both games to Sheffield United and Derby County when Anita and Dallas both filled in and the Leeds hierarchy badly need a solution. John has made an impressive start at Ibrox, showing real flair with his forward raids and also an eye for goal. He increasingly looks a sound option.

Likely to happen?

It is a seemingly complex deal, as John is on a season-long loan at Rangers and it is not just a matter of Leeds making a bid that is acceptable to Cardiff and persuading the player to move. Nonetheless, money talks and a decent offer from the promotion hopefuls could swing the deal for a player who was deemed surplus to requirements by Neil Warnock.
