Manchester United are plotting a January swoop for Tottenham star Danny Rose, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

The Italian outlet claims that the 27-year-old defender remains a long-term target for Jose Mourinho’s side and that they are preparing a fresh move after a rejection in the summer.

It is understood that United could make an attempt to sign the England international when the transfer window re-opens, but that Premier League rivals Chelsea are also keen.

Rose has been sidelined since 31 January with a serious knee injury, but is expected to make a long awaited return later this month.

He was recognised as the best left-back in the Premier League before his injury setback and has since seen his position at Spurs filled very well by teammate Ben Davies.

The powerhouse defender proved too much down the left flank for most oppositions, with his blistering pace and tough tackling approach making him a top player.

Good move for Spurs?

Spurs should reject any approaches in January for Rose as he could be a brilliant lift to the side when he makes his full recovery.

The full-back has been such an asset to Mauricio Pochettino’s side both offensively and defensively in the past couple of seasons, although Davies must be credited for his recent form.

The North London club need to keep their star players if they are to progress to the next level of winning silverware and Rose should certainly be considered one of those players.

He will be desperate to ensure his place in the 2018 World Cup squad for England and could still have a big season for Spurs.

Likely to happen?

Pochettino already allowed Kyle Walker to leave for Manchester City in the summer and it seems unlikely he would do the same with Rose.

Spurs have already rebuffed interest from United in the defender and would likely do the same again in the summer for a player that is under contract until 2021, meaning they could demand a mega transfer fee.

The left-back did give an ill-advised interview over the summer in which he questioned the club’s wage structure and that incident has since been resolved.

United do have a major pulling power to attract big players right now, but Rose’s future is likely to be with Spurs.
