Derek McInnes has been installed the odds-on favourite to become the next manager of Rangers, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

Sky Bet priced the Aberdeen boss, 46, as the 4/7 favourite on Friday afternoon to succeed Pedro Caixinha in the Ibrox dugout.

McInnes is the strong frontrunner in the betting race ahead of former Gers manager Alex McLeish (9/2) and ex-Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies (7/1).

McInnes has jumped up in the betting in the last 24 hours.

He was priced at 7/1 by Sky Bet on Thursday to land the Rangers job in the immediate wake of Caixinha’s exit.

Caixinha was sacked on Thursday after a 228-day reign at Rangers, the shortest tenure in the club’s history.

He was given his marching orders after the team slipped to fourth in the Scottish Premiership in the wake of their draw against Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.

McInnes has been in charge at Aberdeen since April 2013 and has steered the club to consecutive runners-up positions in the SPL in the last three seasons.

OPINION

McInnes is clearly a strong candidate to replace Caixinha, although there are question marks as to whether he is the right candidate. The Scot knows the SPL inside out, has steered Aberdeen to three consecutive league runners-up spots and is well aware of the expectations at Rangers after five years at the club during his playing days, when he won the treble. His trophy count as a manager is just the 2014 Scottish League Cup which will put off many Light Blues fans, who also claim he lacks the ambition to be in the Ibrox hotseat. His midweek comments that Celtic are unbeatable have also not gone down well among the Rangers faithful.
