On-loan Celtic attacker Ryan Christie has revealed that he would be shattered if Derek McInnes quit Aberdeen to become the new manager of Rangers.

The Scotsman claim McInnes is the favourite to replace Pedro Caixinha at Rangers after leading the Dons to three consecutive second-place finishes in the Scottish Premiership and winning a Scottish League Cup with the Pittodrie side.
The Aberdeen manager would leave a devastated group of players behind him at Pittodrie were he to head to Ibrox in the coming weeks.

Christie is in his second loan stint with the Dons and has established himself as a key player under McInnes, who has hailed the winger as one of Aberdeen’s best players.

“Derek McInnes is the main reason I came up here,” explained Christie, as quoted by the Scotsman website. “The way I got on with him and I loved playing under him for the last six months of last season.
“When I was told I could go out on loan again, Aberdeen was top of my list for that reason.
“I’ve no regrets. I have loved training with him and being part of his squad.
“But it’s not just me – a lot of the boys will be disappointed if he did leave because of what a great manager he is.
“It’s a credit to him that we’ve maintained second place over the years.”

Aberdeen have only lost two of the 23 league games that Christie has been involved in since initially joining in January.

After joining Celtic from Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2015, Christie has struggled to make the breakthrough at Parkhead and has enjoyed fruitful loan spells back with Caley and at Aberdeen.

The wide man will have one year remaining on his Celtic contract when he returns to the Hoops at the end of the season.

McInnes, who played down being linked with Rangers on Friday, attracted interest from Sunderland in the summer before agreeing a new contract with the Dons.

The former Scotland midfielder has been in charge at Aberdeen since April 2013 and has steered the club to consecutive runners-up positions in the SPL in the last three seasons.

Last season, the Dons finished nine points in front of a Rangers side managed initially by Mark Warburton and latterly by Caixinha.

Aberdeen beat Ross County 2-1 at the weekend to close to within a point of Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic.

OPINION

McInnes is clearly a strong candidate to replace Caixinha, although there are question marks as to whether he is the right candidate. The Scot knows the SPL inside out, has steered Aberdeen to three consecutive league runners-up spots and is well aware of the expectations at Rangers after five years at the club during his playing days, when he won the treble. His trophy count as a manager is just the 2014 Scottish League Cup, a figure which will put off many Light Blues fans, who were also distinctly unimpressed last week when he said that Celtic are unbeatable.
