Alan Pardew has held initial talks with Rangers about taking over as manager, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that Pardew’s representatives have held preliminary discussions with the Ibrox board after he recently turned down the chance to take over as manager of Europa League club Dynamo Kiev.

The 56-year-old has been working as a pundit for Sky Sports but has now emerged as a surprise contender to replace Caixinha.

The Mail report that former Newcastle United and West Ham boss Pardew has been holding out for a Premier League post but he is now a shock contender to take over at Ibrox.

His last job was at Crystal Palace, where he was sacked just before Christmas 2016 after a string of poor results.

Former Scotland international Graeme Murty has taken interim charge of the Gers for the second time in 2017 and led Rangers to a 3-1 win over Hearts at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Derek McInnes is the bookies favourite to take charge at Rangers, with reports suggesting the former Ibrox midfielder could be given permission to talk with the Gers board this week.

OPINION

Pardew would be a brilliant appointment for Rangers. He is an experienced Premier League manager and has a fine track record in the English top flight, even if he fell out badly with Newcastle United fans and is not to everyone’s tastes. Nevertheless, the former defender would instantly command the respect of the players, is tactically astute and well enough connected to recruit better players than the club have signed for over five years. Get the deal done, Dave King.
