Celtic sensation Mikey Johnston could be handed a shock start in their Saturday afternoon league clash against Kilmarnock, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim that manager Brendan Rodgers is likely to rest up to six top players to ensure they are fresh for the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

It is said that striker Johnston, 18, is in line to make what would be only his second start in the Scottish Premiership.

The teenager was handed a new contract immediately after impressing in the 57 minutes he was given in a 4-1 triumph against St Johnstone last May.

The Scottish Sun report that young centre-back Kristoffer Ajer could be another in the frame for the Killie game, as the Hoops look to equal a 100-year British record of 62 domestic games unbeaten.

Celtic are three points clear of second-placed Aberdeen going into Saturday’s clash at Parkhead.

OPINION

Rodgers has made no attempt to hide the fact that his priority is ensuring Celtic can compete against the Champions League big hitters. Domestically, the Hoops are so far ahead of all their rivals that the manager can make major alterations and the difference to the final outcome is negligible. It appears that midweek hero Moussa Dembele, who scored twice against Aberdeen, could be one of those rested with the clash against Bayern in mind. Johnston has a brilliant chance to show what all the fuss is about after being hailed as a potential star six months ago.
