Josh Onomah has revealed that leaving Tottenham on loan this season has had a major impact on his England performances.
The midfielder, 20, believes he has made huge strides in the weeks since leaving Spurs and joining Aston Villa on a season-long loan.
Onomah has scored twice in five Championship starts, and made 12 appearances in total for Villa since dropping down a division to the Championship.
He added to his tally for the season in England’s Under-21s victory over Scotland on Friday when he put Aidy Boothroyd’s men on course for a 3-1 victory with a stunning volley.
He has got more game time at Villa, where he has started seven of his 12 matches.
OPINION
Onomah is a rising star for club and country. He has been highly thought of at Tottenham for some time, and many would rather him be in the matchday squad than 2016 flop signing Georges-Kevin NKoudou. But the player is certainly better served by playing regular senior football rather than sitting on the sidelines, or playing at Under-23s level. Onomah has out-grown that standard, and needs to be playing against hardened professionals week in, week out. Spurs will be delighted that he is developing out on loan. They have benefitted from Harry Kane learning his trade that way, and would be thrilled if Onomah can rapidly improve while at Villa.
