Frank Lampard has taken a swipe at Tottenham defender Serge Aurier following his performance against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Spurs picked up an impressive point away to the Spanish giants in their Champions League group clash.

The North London club are now well placed to reach the knockout rounds of the competition after Borussia Dortmund slipped up by drawing to Apoel Nicosia.

Spurs earned a 1-1 draw as a Raphael Varane own goal put the visitors in front, but an inevitable Cristiano Ronaldo goal meant the points were shared.

Lampard has ripped into Aurier after the game during BT Sport’s live coverage and stated that pace is simply not enough to cut it at the top level.

The 24-year-old was at fault for the goal Spurs conceded as his last-ditch challenge on Toni Kroos was deemed a foul by the referee, with Ronaldo converting the penalty.

“He looks like a player that relies on his pace. At this level pace is not enough,” Lampard told BT Sport.

Aurier has enjoyed a mixed start since his summer arrival and is yet to convince fans he is the right replacement for Kyle Walker.

The Ivory Coast international has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons so far for his brief Spurs career and the Madrid clash was another frustrating night for him.

However, Spurs will have seen enough in the former PSG star to see he possesses genuine pace and ability on the ball.

He is currently in fierce competition with teammate Kieran Trippier as the battle for the permanent right-back slot heats up.
