Young midfielder Daniel Barlaser has signed a new contract with Newcastle which will keep him at the club until 2019.

The news was announced on the official Newcastle Twitter page on Saturday.

Barlaser has made three senior appearances for Newcastle, making his debut in last season’s FA Cup win against Birmingham City.

He also played 70 minutes in the defeat in the League Cup to Nottingham Forest this season.

The Turkish-born player has made six appearances for his country’s Under-17 team.

Talking to NUFC TV after he signed his contract extension, Barlaser said: “It feels great. To have another two years at the club is really good, and hopefully I can kick on from here.”

“It’s been a boyhood dream to play to play for Newcastle since I was young, so to play three times is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get a chance in the Premier League sometime soon.”

That might be some way off as Barlaser is targeting a January loan move to get more first-team experience.

“My short term aims are, because I want to move on loan in January, are to win as many games as I can with the under-23s, get through the Checkatrade Cup and get through the International Cup,” he told NUFC TV.

“Long term, I want to get on loan in January, show what I can do, and hopefully be back and ready to play for the first-team.”

OPINION

Barlaser has huge potential and the loan move in January will be a key one for his progression. He’s experienced life in the Newcastle first team and as a boyhood fan would love to come back to the club and make his mark as a regular. A good Championship club would be the ideal ground for him to learn more about his game and come back a stronger and more complete player.
