Jose Mourinho: The best team won

Jose Mourinho cut a humble figure after his side’s shock defeat against Huddersfield, saying that “the best team won”.

Huddersfield beat Man United 2-1 with goals from Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre proving to be enough despite a Marcus Rashford consolation in the second half.

The loss means that United are now five points adrift of neighbours Man City, after Guardiola’s men demolished Burnley 3-0.

Talking after the game, Mourinho was surprisingly honest as he was interviewed on Sky Sports.

“We deserved it. They wanted it more, they wanted to compete more, they wanted it more.

“When you lose to the better team there’s nothing to say

“The best team won. It surprised me, I wasn’t expecting it.

“[Huddersfield] started with emotion, aggression, passion, the team that played the game of their lives deserved it. We deserved the punishment.”

OPINION

What did Mourinho have for breakfast this morning? We can’t remember the last time he was interviewed after a bad result and gave an honest interview like this. He made no excuses – possibly after remembering that he had accused fellow manager Antonio Conte of complaining too much – and praised Huddersfield for their passion and performance. If all managers reacted like this it might be a bit boring but it was wholly refreshing to hear Mourinho take one one on the chin. And Mourinho was right. Huddersfield did deserve it as Man United created startlingly few chances in a game they’d have expected to win. Mourinho needs to be honest with his players now – especially Victor Lindelof, who was terrible today – and try to get them back on track.
