Tottenham were one of several clubs who tried to sign Liverpool striker Divock Origi on loan this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claim that both Spurs and Newcastle United made moves to snap up the Belgium international on a temporary deal but the Merseyside giants wanted to send him overseas.

The Echo report there was significant foreign interest in the 22-year-old forward, with Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen all in the hunt.

However it was Wolfsburg who secured Origi’s signing with the “most attractive offer”, which was a loan fee of around £6million for the striker.

He has scored once in five matches for the Bundesliga giants after netting 21 times in 77 appearances for Liverpool during his two seasons at the club.

Origi’s contract at Anfield is set to expire in the summer of 2019.

OPINION

It is no surprise that Tottenham wanted Origi. The baffling thing is why Jurgen Klopp felt that Dominic Solanke was an upgrade on a forward who has delivered some memorable moments in a red shirt, most notably when Liverpool tore the defences of Borussia Dortmund and Villarreal to shreds in their run to the Europa League final in 2015-16. Origi’s Premier League goal scoring record might be average, with 12 goals in 51 appearances, but Mauricio Pochettino would have felt that he offered a different approach to the front line to first choice striker Harry Kane. Instead, Spurs secured Fernando Llorente on a permanent deal, although he is more of a target man. Time will tell if he is the right man.
