Everton have made contact with Walter Mazzarri about becoming their new manager, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that the Toffees contacted the 56-year-old on Sunday after the defeat to Burnley about the possibility of him taking the helm at Goodison Park.

Ronald Koeman is under huge pressure at the Merseyside club after a poor start to the season and the board have backed the current boss despite fans calling for his sack.

It is understood that Mazzarri would be keen on taking over at Everton and could fly to Liverpool this week if Koeman is axed.

Mazzarri previously managed in the Premier League with Watford and has been without a job since his dismissal at Vicarage Road at the end of last season.

Good move for Everton?

Mazzarri was dismissed by Watford despite keeping them in the Premier League last season and he is a manager that has a moderate record.

The Italian has managed some big clubs including Inter Milan and Napoli during his career, meaning he would be able to deal with the pressure at Everton.

He would be available for the Toffees if they decide to sack Koeman, but they should stand by their current boss.

Koeman should be given more time at the Merseyside club as he is good enough to get his side out of their poor form.

Likely to happen?

Koeman’s future at Everton is still under major doubt despite backing from the board and he is surely on the verge of the sack.

He will need a couple of positive results after the international break to save his position and that could be difficult still without a prolific target man in attack.

Mazzarri is currently available and reportedly keen on taking the job on Merseyside, but he may not be a preferred choice by fans.

There would surely be a number of other names high on the wishlist of supporters and they could be left disappointed if the Italian joins.
