Scholes rips into Lukaku after listless performance v Benfica

|

Paul Scholes slammed Romelu Lukaku’s errant performance against Benfica with a brilliant put-down after the match.

The Man United striker was off the pace in the 1-0 Champions League win, although Mourinho’s men were never troubled themselves by the hosts at the Estádio da Luz on Wednesday night.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game from a free kick about 40 yards out on the left.

He spotted Mile Svilar off his line and took an ambitious shot, which was carried over the line by the back-pedalling keeper.

After the game some Man United players – including Lukaku – sportingly went to console 18-year-old Svilar.

In the BT Sport studio, Gary Lineker made mention of this saying, “I know it’s easier when you’ve won the game, but it’s a nice display of sportsmanship.”

Paul Scholes replied, “Yes it was nice to see.

“It was probably the closest Lukaku got to the keeper all night.”

OPINION

It was hard not to feel for the young goalkeeper last night, who looked out of his depth at this level. However, it was also easy to feel a bit of sympathy for Lukaku. This is the second game in a row where the striker has been isolated and frustrated as Mourinho set his team up defensively, and seemingly happy for a draw. It could be argued that both teams were there to be beaten, especially with United’s potent attack, but that’s not how Mourinho likes to play these games. After the game Mourinho said, “being good defensively is not a crime”, and that’s true. But attacking isn’t either. Lukaku was listless and didn’t help matters, and United fans will be hoping for a reaction at the weekend when they take on Huddersfield.
