Arsenal fans react to Walcott display v Red Star Belgrade

|

Arsenal beat Red Star Belgrade 1-0 in Serbia in the early kick-off on Thursday, but Gunners fans were furious with the performance of Theo Walcott.

Wenger named an experimental line-up, with a back-three of Rob Holding, Mohamed Elneny and Mathieu Debuchy, who was making his first start for the club in 11 months.

Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott supported Olivier Giroud in attack, with youngsters Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joseph Willock and Reiss Nelson in midfield.

If Arsenal fans were bemused at the start of the game, they weren’t happy after a dull and listless first half.

Both goalkeepers made a decent save and Richmond Boakye hit the post with a fine downward header from a corner but, despite enjoying a lot of possession, the Gunners created little and looked loose.

The second half was a bit more lively but there was no real hint of a goal for the Arsenal fans until Milan Rodic was sent off in the 80th minute.

Up stepped Giroud in the 85th minute to win it for Arsenal with an outrageous overhead kick into the corner of the net.

It was the one moment of brilliance in the game, but it wasn’t enough to save Walcott from a mauling.
