Ally McCoist has identified Alfredo Morelos as the Rangers dangerman ahead of the Old Firm derby against Celtic at Ibrox today (Saturday).

Celtic are unbeaten in 56 domestic matches and are strong favourites going into the first clash of the two titans of the season, especially as the hosts are missing captain Lee Wallace and key centre-back Bruno Alves through injury.

Rangers legend McCoist believes it would be suicide for Rangers to play two up top, as they have done for most of the season through the partnership of Morelos and Kenny Miller.

But the former striker is in no doubt about the potential of the team’s new star forward Morelos, who has scored eight goals in 10 matches since his summer arrival.

“They’ve got a goalscorer now in Morelos who is a proper goalscorer and if they can get service to him they will score goals,” McCoist said on The Keys & Gray Show on BeIN Sports on Friday night.

“He will be a threat but the formation Rangers play will be really interesting.

“In my opinion there is no way on this earth you can go two up front. They have to go with an extra man in the middle of park.

“Celtic played with three centre-backs up at Dundee and I think they might go back to a four.”

OPINION

The signs are that Morelos could be the real deal. He has a spiky temperament – and Celtic will target that in the Old Firm – but he has the priceless gift of knowing where to be at the right time, and then being clinical at key moments. Rangers have made some smart buys this summer, but the Colombian could turn out to be the real gem. Sure, he is an unpolished diamond and is raw in many ways, but McCoist is right. If Celtic stop him, then they go a long way to stopping Rangers.
