Everton players have been in this situation before, says Sigurdsson

Summer signing Gylfi Sigurdsson believes that Everton can turn things around as a lot of the squad have been in a similar position before.

The Toffees suffered their fourth successive defeat on Sunday when Manchester United smashed Ronald Koeman’s side 4-0 at Old Trafford.

The hammering followed two Premier League defeats to Tottenham and Chelsea as well as their 3-0 Europa League loss to Italian side Atalanta last Thursday.

Despite their disappointing set of results new recruit, Sigurdsson, is confident the squad will be able to turn things around in their upcoming fixtures.

“A lot of us have been in this kind of position before – where things are not going your way,” Sigurdsson explained, as quoted on the club’s official website.

“It does not look too good at the moment but I know we are more than good enough to turn this around.

“And I think with the staff and the players we have, and the will within the team and the players, eventually we will turn this around.”

Following a number of difficult opponents the Toffees will face a series of smaller clubs this week.

Koeman’s squad will be preparing for their League Cup third round match against Sunderland which takes place on Wednesday before they host Bournemouth in the Premier League at the weekend.

OPINION

Sigurdsson’s honesty is a positive thing in the Toffees’ current situation, as there is no point beating around the bush and pretending everything is fine. The players must wipe the slate clean in their head and push for victories from these smaller games over the coming week as a win against Sunderland and Bournemouth could be the confidence boost desperately needed in the dressing room. Sigurdsson has said that the club will ‘eventually’ turn it around, but this can’t take too long as it will simply be too late and their aim of qualifying for Europe will be virtually non-existent.
