Pontus Jansson has compared Matthew Pennington to Man United centre-back Victor Lindelof.

Jansson was talking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the Sheffield Wednesday derby on Sunday.

Pennington was injured on his debut for Leeds, in their first Championship game against Bolton.

Leeds won that game 3-2 but lost Pennington for the next seven league games.

He returned to the bench against Ipswich last week and played 45 minutes in the defeat to Cardiff, coming on for an out of sorts Pablo Hernandez.

Jansson missed the Bolton game through suspension but finally had a chance to see the Everton loanee in action.

Asked about what he made of the 22-year-old, he compared him to Lindelof, who signed for Manchester United over the summer for £32million.

“He’s a good player, he’s professional and wants to learn, he’s still very young. He reminds me a lot of Victor Lindelof at Man United.

“They’re similar as football players but also as people, nice and calm.”

Pennington has made nine senior appearances for Everton and joined Leeds over the summer on a season-long loan.

OPINION

Pennington was unlucky to injure himself on his debut for Leeds but is now ready to challenge for a first-team spot alongside Pontus Jansson. He’s looked quality every time he’s played and we expect him to start against Sheffield Wednesday. Lindelof made a mega-money move to Man United over the summer and Jose Mourinho obviously saw something he rated. He’s had troubles settling in at Old Trafford but put in a good performance against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday and will be hoping to start the Premier League game against Crystal Palace with Phil Jones struggling with injury. Pennington will be very happy to be compared to Jansson’s fellow countryman.
