Tottenham have reportedly seen an opening offer turned down for Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial, but must be persistent in their chase and make another attempt to sign him.

RMC Sport correspondent Mohamed Bouhafsi reported on his personal Twitter account that Spurs have bid for 21-year-old.

However, it is understood that United’s response was emphatic and they rejected the offer for their left winger.

Spurs may have suffered an initial setback in trying to sign Martial, but chairman Daniel Levy should go all out to make him the club’s marquee signing this summer.

The north London club are still yet to sign anyone in the transfer window and don’t want a repeat of last season, where they panic bought Moussa Sissoko for £30million from Newcastle on deadline-day.

Mauricio Pochettino has the foundations of a squad that can win the Premier League title in the new campaign and arguably has the best starting XI in the division.

However, his squad still need supplementing in some areas, particularly with the added fixtures of a Champions League campaign.

Martial would be the perfect addition at Spurs and provide real competition in the wide areas.

Heung-Min Son and Christian Eriksen are the two standout players on the wings for Spurs, but there is a real shortage of quality behind them that are fighting for a starting position.

Martial would be an excellent fit under Pochettino and the highly-rated talent would only improve under the tutelage of the Argentinian manager.

The France international has shown glimpses of his quality at Man United and shown why they forked out £36million for his signature back in 2015.

Spurs may have to pay a similar fee to bring him to London, but the electric winger would be a superb addition and the club will need to break their strict transfer policy if they really want to press ahead and win a league title.

Martial has grown frustrated at Old Trafford and was an unused substitute in the Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid, suggesting he could struggle for game time in the new season.

The rising star has shown he can be effective when given the chance, scoring eight goals and supplying eight assists in 42 appearances last season.

Spurs must continue with their chase of the talented Martial and up their bid to try get a deal over the line.
