OPINION

Tottenham have reportedly joined the race to sign Newcastle wonderkid Freddie Woodman.

The Chronicle claim that Spurs have entered the race for the 20-year-old goalkeeper alongside Everton and Crystal Palace.

It is understood that the shot stopper wants a loan move away from St James’ Park and that Bury, Rotherham, Northampton and Hearts have enquired about that possibility.

The report details that Newcastle will keep Woodman as it stands as a back-up option and are preparing themselves for cash bids in the closing weeks of the transfer window.

Woodman has emerged as a big upcoming talent after helping England’s Under-20s side win the World Cup in the summer.

Good move for Spurs?

Newcastle youngster Woodman is certainly someone for the future, but signing him up now could be a good move for Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino has a strong English core at the heart of his side and will want to continue that trend going forward.

The north London club should secure a permanent deal for Woodman and then loan him out for the 2017/18 season to experience regular football.

They don’t need Woodman in their squad now due to experienced pair Hugo Lloris and Michel Form.

However, snapping the English talent up before his valuation flies would be good business and he appears to have a big future ahead of him.

Likely to happen?

Spurs are one of many teams that are understandably considering Newcastle ace Woodman, who was superb in the World Cup over the summer.

There is no indication that Spurs would have any edge over their rivals and the goalkeeper would realise he would stand no first-team chance in the near future.

However, they have a great policy of bringing through youngsters and that could work in the club’s favour.

Newcastle are still trying to balance their goalkeeping options for the new season and for the meantime it seems likely that Woodman will stay in the North East.
